Pro tip 4 reasons to turn down new business

Pro tip 4 reasons to turn down new businessPro tip 4 reasons to turn down new businessAs freelancers, the question Whats next? is constantly echoing in the back of ur minds. The pressure to secure our next client can sometimes be so overwhelming that when opportunity knocks, we pounce at it without stopping to consider if its actually something that makes sense for our independent businesses. Sometimes, we need to say no.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIn todays Pro Tip, Im sharing the red flags to look out for and four reasons to turn down new business. Not Your ExpertiseThis is the number one reason why I turn down new business, and it wasnt a lesson easily learned. While public relations is the overarching field I freelance in, I specialize in the video games and eSports industries. This is my bread and butter where I am consistently staying up-to-date on news, decision makers, and have an arsenal of contacts. When a guitar company recently reached out seeking PR guidance for their upcoming launch, I knew I wasnt the best person to help them. Sure, I could have gone through the steps, but I also knew that even my best effort would have delivered C+ results. This is a completely foreign field to me- and thats just leid something Im comfortable with (and you shouldnt be either). The only reason to take on new client work in a field you dont specialize in is if it is a field you are wanting to work in more. I knew that the guitar brand opportunity would be a one-time gig and wasnt the best use of my (or the clients) time. I also never want to give a brand a reason to have a poor opinion of me or my work and have found that I gain greater respect from people when I admit to not being the best person for the opportunity. Instead, I listen to their needs and recommend any leads I may have for someone who is a better fit.If youre ever in a similar situation, use t his as an opportunity to share the kind of work you are better suited for so they can recommend you in the future when the right occasion comes about.Overloaded SOWEver been on a new business call with a potential client and feel your spidey senses go off because theres just no way one person could possibly complete all of this work? Listen to themDont let a clients unrealistic expectations create doubt in your mind for what you should be capable of. For example, if theyre looking for a multi-tiered launch program that covers public relations for three countries, social media management, and a content program to support it and its all coming out of your SOW- thats a big no. However, if they want you to recruit and manage an agency to execute the strategy you create to support these verticals- thats a different story.Dont be afraid to ask detailed questions and even call out concerns about workload. I always try to offer solutions, like the agency scenario, when the scope of work is just too demanding for one person alone.Easy WorkThere are two big problems that come with taking on easy work one, it takes up a considerate amount of your time two, it doesnt progress you forward. If you continue to do work that doesnt challenge you, youre doing yourself a huge disservice. In freelancing, we have to hold ourselves accountable and set our own milestones to keep advancing in a forward direction. We have to learn new tricks of the trade and become skilled in the latest technology and social media platforms. If you keep doing the same things, you will ultimately become dispensable, and that is the one thing we all want to avoid. If youve been working with a client on work that isnt helping you advance and are afraid of losing them, dont be. Identify areas where you can offer more and schedule a time to present your ideas to them.Unnecessary NegotiationsYouve determined your rate and shared it with your potential client, and they instantly try to negotiate. Red flag You r rate is your rate for a reason. If the client shares their budget and its lower than you would usually work for, express that and share where youre willing (if anywhere) to compromise. However, if the client pushes for you to share your rate before sharing their budget, only to shoot you down and go in for a low ball price- these are unnecessary negotiations. You want to work with clients who understand the value of your time and also respect the risk youre equally taking by choosing to work with them. While it may feel impossible to turn down work as a freelancer, its important to understand the necessity of taking on opportunities that progress you and your business forward, because forward is the only direction your independent journey should take you. This article first appeared on Create + Cultivate. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

2 research-backed strategies employees can use against a bullying boss

2 research-backed strategies employees can use against a bullying babo2 research-backed strategies employees can use against a bullying bossWhen your boss is making you miserable, too many of us grit our teeth and bear it, thinking we have no power to fight back. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, 65.6 million U.S. employees said they have bosses who intimidate, humiliate and verbally abuse them. But a new study in the Academy of Management Journal found that there are effective coping strategies employees can use against an abusive boss that do not involve throwing up a white flag and quitting. Instead of passively avoiding the problem, or aggressively confronting your boss, geschftlicher umgang management researchers found that employees can leverage their value to the boss goals to tactfully address the bad behavior without risking their careers.Strategy 1 Make yourself indispensable to your bossCiting studies on abusive bosses, researchers explained that the passive op tion of distancing yourself from your boss is less likely to work because abusive behavior is mora likely to persist than stop on its own. Bullying bosses rarely experience sudden changes of heart. Instead of waiting it out, researchers propose overcoming your fight-or-flight instinct by working more closely with your bullying boss and enhancing your value to them. How do you do this? You need to work above and beyond to learn unique skills your boss cannot easily get elsewhere The strategy is for the follower to make himself or herself indispensable to the leader by demonstrating specific knowledge, skills, abilities, or resources that are valuable to the leader, the study advises. For example, the follower may take the initiative to acquire a new skill or obtain critical information that is important to the leader. When your boss depends on you, they are motivated to change positively, not out of the kindness of their hearts, but out of self-interest to keep their team productive. I n two field studies on employee-supervisor relationships in a real estate firm and at a commercial bank, the researchers found that the mutual high dependence between managers and followers is characterized by positive interactions, reduced use of threats and coercion, and more importantly, enhanced stability and congeniality in the dyadic relationship. When your boss knows they need you, they are less likely to act out against you and become more likely to listen to your needs.Strategy 2 Team up with coworkers to confront your bossResearchers called this strategy coalition formation. If you are feeling vulnerable to a bullying boss, play the numbers game and find allies with top performers in your office to defend you.Multiple employees presenting a united front have more leverage to confront a single hostile boss, the researchers found The leader may rely on a specific follower in the team for key performance outcomes (e.g., sales promotion). If the focal follower is able to convin ce a highly valued follower to form a united, coordinated front against the leader, the leader may view the focal follower as a single-unit with the valued follower.Employees with bad bosses are not as helpless as they thinkOf course, managing your boss should not be up to employees alone. But this study should give hope to employees suffering quietly that they have more power and agency than they think to fight back. Rather than seeing themselves as defenseless victims, employees can deploy creative tactics like value enhancement and coalition formation to reduce supervisor abuse, so that they can focus on doing their actual job.Writing about their study for Harvard Business Review, coauthors Hui Liao,Elijah Wee, and Dong Liu said that when employees show their combined value to their boss, the knowledge shifts the power balance back in the employees favor Taken together, value enhancement and coalition formation send a strong message to the supervisor You need me more than you thi nk, so take better care of me.

Potential Causes of Afternoon Tiredness

Potential Causes of Afternoon TirednessPotential Causes of Afternoon TirednessAnyone who is overworked or not getting enough sleep at night can feel tired towards the end of the day. Add the daily stresses of family, kids, commuting, and work and it is not surprising that some days we just feel exhausted and ready for bed long before it is time. In mild cases of anafternoon slump, a good nights sleep and eating healthier foods can usually resolve the symptoms, but not all afternoon slump symptoms are so easily addressed. For a growing percentage of those who suffer from this, extreme fatigue could be a warning sign of a serious metabolic disorder. Severe symptoms include a profound and intense desire to sleep, muscle fatigue, sweating, the shakes, headaches, changes in vision, or any combination of unterstellung symptoms. These symptoms are not signs of normal sluggishness but are often signs of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or insulin resistance. Sitting Disease As more employe es have become sedentary, the number of desk workers who develop Sitting Disease is on the rise. Sitting disease is a disorder that puts workers at an increased risk of pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and for cardiovascular problems. Experts reported that even people who sit for extended periods but regularly hit the gym are at risk. Exercise in itself, though obviously critical to our bodies overall, doesnt seem to counter the damaging effects of all this time spent seated. There are many reasons people develop a sluggish feeling in the afternoon (and for some, the afternoon slump occurs in mid-morning). When symptoms worsen or become severe enough that they decrease your ability to complete tasks, you may want to seek advice from a physician to rule out certain health problems. Pre-Diabetes Pre-diabetes is a condition in ?which your body begins to suffer from changes in how it metabolizes carbohydrates. There are few early warning signs, so it is best to see a doctor if you are having severe afternoon slump symptoms or have other risk factors associated with pre-diabetes. Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome (formerly called Syndrome X) are similar to pre-diabetes in that they are metabolic disorders that affect how the body metabolizes carbohydrates. Pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome can all be early warnings signs of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when blood sugar levels are no longer in a normal or pre-diabetic range. Insulin Resistance Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas. It acts as a key to open cells in the body and blood cells to allow energy (glucose) to enter in. Without insulin, a person would die because the energy from thefood they eat would not be able to be used by the body. When blood sugar builds up in the bloodstream, it can damage all organs and tissues in the body and brain and cause coma and death if not treated. If you have insulin resistance, your body may need to overproduce insul in to keep your blood sugars within a normal range, or, it may not make enough insulin to keep your blood sugars in balance. It is called insulin resistance because your body resists the normal action of insulin. Overproduction of insulin can cause fluctuations in blood sugar, weight gain, moodiness, changes in your menstrual cycle (for women), excess facial hair (women), skin tags, changes in skin color (dark, velvety patches called acanthosis nigricans), and periods of profound fatigue. Insulin resistance is more common in people who also have severe allergies, thyroid disorders (especially Hashimotos Thyroiditis), women who have polycystic ovarian syndrome and can be caused by certain types of medications.

The Productivity Costs of Sleep Deprived Workers

The Productivity Costs of Sleep Deprived Workers Most people experience periods of insomnia when your mind simply wont shut off when you need it to. Sometimes individuals choose to lose sleep in order to catch up on neglected personal or professional duties. But while the symptoms of sleep deprivation can be troubling on their own, they can also lead to disasters on the road and in the workplace. In fact, some studies have produced a number to quantify the financial loss attributable to sleep deprivation $18 billion per year.Americans tend to under-sleep by choice, burning the candle at both ends due to hectic work and family schedules, says Laura Stack, time management and productivity expert and professional blogger. We believe we can have more time for work and family by allowing ourselves less time for sleep. However, many of us do snoozeat work, driving to and from workin a state of stupefied sleepiness.Excessive sleepiness at work can account for a productivity decrease of up to one-third and affects the quality and amount of work of which an employee is capable. And those errors, injuries, and other health-related consequences caused by drowsiness only adds to the costs past on to employers. For many people, sleeping less is simply a matter of efficiency, but a recent survey found that 85 percent of people would make an effort to sleep more if they were sure it would improve their life. What many people may be overlooking here are the effects of sleep deprivation such as lapses in short-term memory, lessened reaction time, difficulty concentrating, and flaute of the immune system.
